The magic mountain

The municipality of Davos in the Swiss Alps is famous the world over for its landscape, air and architecture. The outdoor sauna of these chalet owners pays homage to all three: on a level with their garden, they built a free-standing sauna from tongue-and-groove planks – with a view of the adjacent forest, but without somewhere to relax. For all they need to cool down is to step outside in the fresh mountain air, take a dunk in the plunge tub right on their doorstep or dive into the snow ...

A love of nature and craftsmanship
Sometimes, long-standing traditions are simply the best: for these outdoor saunas in Davos, for example, traditional Nordic spruce tongue-and-groove planks were interlocked. This ensures a single flat surface without the need for extra insulation. The walls, ceiling and doors – and even the carved handles – are totally at one with nature. The cast iron sauna heater with its thick chimney also radiates traditional values.

A rustic chalet with a view
To make this garden sauna appear like something out of a winter’s tale, its large window affords users a view of the garden, which is often deep in snow, and the snow-covered fir trees. The rectangular window was placed high enough though to restrict the view inside the cabin. The Davos landscape is best enjoyed from the snug interior of the sweat chamber, enveloped by hot air and the smell of wood ...

The exterior of this solid wood sauna made from tongue-and-groove planks fits in perfectly with the chalet style of the main house. The continuous use of pine in the interior is also reminiscent of Alpine living rooms. The wood-panelled walls and ceiling, the wooden door and the wood-framed window complete the look. The only exceptions in terms of material are the aspen benches and cast iron heater.
